When you meet or talk with someone, you typically look into their eyes to see emotion, meaning, and to judge how they feel. Eyes convey and reflect how we are perceived by others. Some find that Age and Heredity have impacted the appearance of their eyes.
If you have excess upper or lower eyelid skin, bags or puffiness, drooping skin, or conditions that make you look tired or upset, cosmetic eyelid surgery may be an option for you. Typically, eyelid surgery offers a solution for a more youthful, rested, and energetic appearance by correcting excess skin, tissue, and fat that contribute to puffiness, bags, and wrinkles in the upper and lower eyelids.
Most often, eyelid surgery is performed on adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles and do not have a life-threatening illness or medical condition that can impair the healing process. A good candidate needs to have realistic goals for results and improvement of the upper and/or lower eyelids and surrounding area through eyelid surgery.
It is important that you fully disclose to your surgeon your current and past health conditions and history including previous surgical procedures, current medications, and use of vitamins, herbal supplements, nutritional supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. It is also imperative that you disclose medical conditions such as eye disease (such as glaucoma), dry eye, detached retina, thyroid disorders (such as Graves’ disease), un-active or over-active thyroid, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, circulatory disorders, or diabetes.
During the consultation, you will learn about the options available for eyelid surgery and how those options can improve the appearance of your eyelids and the surrounding region. You will also share your goals and discuss likely outcomes of surgery. You will share your health history, discuss the potential risks and complications, and your plastic surgeon will answer your questions.
You will receive a recommended course of treatment based on your anatomy, the condition you wish to have corrected, what is causing the condition, and your realistic goals for improvement. Dr Stevens will also answer your questions. Remember that by carefully following Dr Stevens’ advice and instructions- both before and after surgery- you can do your part to minimize some of the risks.
Like any cosmetic procedure, eyelid surgery requires an individualized approach. Eyelid surgery can offer dramatic improvement in the upper and lower eyelids and surrounding regions. This degree of correction of drooping eyelids, puffiness or bags can only be achieved surgically, by repositioning muscle, redistributing fat that has settled into contours and when necessary by removing excess skin.
Where a low positioned brow or hooding at the outer corner of the eyes contribute to the aging appearance of the eyes, a browlift may be more appropriate than, or recommended in conjunction with eyelid surgery. In addition, a brow lift can also smooth a lined or furrowed forehead. This procedure is most commonly performed with minimally invasive techniques using a surgical endoscope via small incisions in the scalp.
A midface lift, one that corrects sagging in the cheek region and pronounced nasolabial folds (creases from the nose to the outer corner of the mouth) may be performed at the same time.
Droopy conditions of the upper eyelid can be corrected through eyelid surgery. An incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid allows repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissue, and/or removal of excess skin to create a smoother upper eyelid contour.
Conditions of the lower eyelid may be corrected using a transconjunctival incision, one hidden inside the lower eyelid. Through this incision, fat is redistributed, (transpositioned) or some fat may be removed, and sagging muscles are tightened. An incision just below the lower lash line is an alternate technique allowing for correction of lower eyelid conditions and removal of excess skin in the lower lid.
The incision lines from eyelid surgery are well concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid region. Results appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside to reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region, and an alert and rejuvenated appearance.
The benefits of your surgery should reveal a smooth, firm contour of the upper and/or lower eyelids. What matters more is that the appearance of your eyes matches the way you feel inside - youthful, vital and alert.
