Having plastic surgery and choosing your surgeon is a personal and essential decision that can be better made only after being properly informed. This website is here to assist you in that endeavor, and to educate you on all aspects of Dr Stevens’ practice.
Over the past few years, as aesthetic surgery has become so popular, there has been a significant increase in “cosmetic surgeons”. Many of these doctors have not had formal surgical training and have relied instead on “weekend courses” to train themselves in plastic surgery. To ensure yourself of optimizing your result, you should only choose a surgeon that has gone through a rigorous program of surgical training, specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. After which he or she must take and succeed in a challenging series of written and oral examinations. Then and only then can a plastic surgeon be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery,(ABPS) and join the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The ABPS is one of only two plastic surgery boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Being a board certified plastic surgeon is an important measure of a surgeon’s training but to be a member of the prestigious American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery shows an extra level of competency and/or training in cosmetic procedures.
When a surgeon is shown to have the highest ethical standards and is well respected by all surgeons in his community, not just his plastic surgical peers, then he or she can become a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Of utmost importance is that you as the patient must feel comfortable with your surgeon and that he or she has met your expectations as to what characteristics you feel your plastic surgeon should have: Caring, Integrity, Communication, Patience, Surgical Judgment and an Aesthetic Eye. These qualities in a surgeon can not be conveyed by the images and information on a website alone but rather by meeting with the surgeon in person. |
